Define content and viewing rights
Identify live sources, schedules, channels and whether recordings are required. Establish who can publish and who may watch each stream. Decide whether viewing is public, account-based or restricted by an entitlement. Content rights, subscriptions and geographic restrictions are requirements to clarify with the owners; adding a player does not resolve them.
Choose the viewing requirements
Agree supported browsers and devices, quality levels, captions where required and the acceptable delay between broadcast and playback. Very low latency and resilient playback involve different tradeoffs. Define controls for pause, replay, casting or recordings only when they serve the project. Plan clear states for waiting, live, ended, unavailable and interrupted playback.
Scope the platform around the stream
A platform may need accounts, channel pages, search, a schedule, moderation or notifications. If chat is included, assign moderation responsibilities and define spam, blocking and reporting behaviour. Separate the application’s responsibilities from the streaming provider’s delivery functions. Identify APIs, provider limits and operational access before promising features.
Estimate delivery and operational needs
Clarify expected concurrent viewers, typical viewing duration and the markets served. These affect delivery capacity and provider charges, which cannot be inferred from the number of registered accounts alone. Specify how usage is measured, who sees alerts and how capacity is tested. Avoid promising an unlimited audience without a verified delivery plan.
Rehearse the event and its failure cases
Run a representative broadcast through the intended workflow. Test joining late, switching quality, reconnecting, ending the stream and losing the source. Check viewers with permitted and denied access on supported devices. Agree the team responsible during an event, fallback messaging, recording handling and a launch checklist. The rehearsal should verify the viewer experience as well as provider status.
Review checklist
- Sources, rights, schedules and recordings.
- Viewer access, devices and acceptable playback delay.
- Provider boundaries, interaction and moderation.
- Concurrency, duration, delivery costs and alerts.
- Event rehearsal, interruption states and support owner.
Bring a sample event and a target viewing journey to discovery. That makes it possible to design the platform and select a delivery approach around real requirements.
